When you create objects in Marionette, you add IFC information for the object into the Marionette network. But you can also add IFC information to the object without editing the Marionette network. After you create your Marionette network into an object, you can use the Object Info palette to add IFC information. When you and IFC information to your marionette object becomes an object that will be exported when you export your IFC project. All when you had the IFC information in this way, the information stays on the object even if you enter the Marionette network and edit it. As with other plug-in objects, the IFC information stays on the object when you change the parameters on the Object Info palette.

Vectorworks Tip 348 – BIM and IFC
cadmovie1503_09 – BIM for Landscape – Part 9
IFC – When you create BIM projects, one of the major parts of the project is the ability to share information with other people who will not be using the same program. IFC was intended as a way of sharing information (not just lines as in DXF/DWG) between computer programs, allowing Vectorworks to talk to Revit or Archicad, for example.

Importing IFC Files into Vectorworks – As well as exporting IFC Projects, you can also import them into Vectorworks. Unlike DXF/DWG, you do not have to start with a new file, you can import the IFC Project into an existing file, but the IFC project will add new layers and classes to your file. Continue reading

Creating Special IFC Objects – When you import your IFC project into your model viewer, you will only see the IFC Entities. The reason for this is that Vectorworks will only export IFC entities. So if you have created your own furniture or your own sanitary fixtures they will not be exported.

Using an IFC Model Viewer – There are other IFC model viewers, but for this example I have used the one from Solibri. I use this particular one as it is freely available and many users have also recommended it.

Setting Up A Project for IFC – If you are setting up a project in Vectorworks using standard architectural building elements such as doors and windows, you should also use layers, classes and stories. Continue reading

IFC Model Viewer – Before you send your IFC project to your client or consultant, you should check your IFC model with an IFC model viewer. Some you have to pay for and some are freely available.

Exporting Your Model to IFC – The IFC export command will export your entire model as an IFC Project. You do not have to activate layers, but you do have to activate the classes that you want exported. Invisible classes are not exported to IFC.

IFC Objects in Vectorworks – Many objects in Vectorworks are designed to easily export to IFC. For example, a door in Vectorworks is designed to export as a door object in IFC. When you use the export IFC command in Vectorworks, it knows that the object is a door and exports all the door information needed. The model viewer will import the object as an IFC door, with the correct height and width. Windows, doors, walls, columns and most building objects work in the same way, making it easy to export your model to IFC.
Vectorworks Tip #075 – IFC – IFC Viewer
There is a lot of talk these days about Building Information Modeling (BIM). Part of BIM is being able to share your Vectorworks file to other consultants using different computer programs. The technique for sharing your model is to export your model as IFC. When you give your IFC model to a consultant it’s a good idea to check the model using an IFC Viewer. There are a few free IFC viewers available. One of them is Solibri (http://www.solibri.com) .

IFC Exporting and Importing – There has been a lot of talk recently about Building Information Modeling. In some countries this has become a major topic because some governments are moving towards a situation where all projects will be delivered using BIM principles. A major part of BIM this is to use IFC to export and import information from other parts of the project. Continue reading

podcast140 Changing Wall Lengths in Vectorworks 2013
This is a small but useful change to wall technology. It will allow you to quickly update your plans without having to select dimension, or without having to drag your walls.
SST_1204 Industry Foundation Classes
IFC stands for Industry Foundation Classes. The classes referred to in IFC have nothing to do with classes and Vectorworks.
cadmovie815 – Importing IFC into Vectorworks
As well as exporting IFC, you can also import IFC projects into Vectorworks.
cadmovie814 – Assigning IFC Data to Objects
If you do not assign IFC data to objects, they will not export to IFC. This shows you have to assign the data correctly.
cadmovie813 – Doors and Windows Flip in IFC
flipped doors and windows appear differently in IFC. You can use a worksheet in Vectorworks to check if the doors and windows are flipped.
