In this session we continued with our Getting Started sessions for landscape. We looked at site models, site modifies, adding retaining walls, adding missing models and adding hardscape areas.
Vectorworks has the tools and commands to quickly create a concept model. But we want mode than just a few elevations, we need to know if the main site can be subdivided, how large the project can be, and how much it might cost to construct.
In this manual we will be looking at ways to create and visualise the concept. We will start by creating the site, then the site model, create the adjoining buildings, create the design, and set up solar studies.
Creating A Camera View – We need to create a perspective view, and the Renderworks camera is one of the quickest ways to achieve this. The camera view can control the perspective, the depth of field, and the rendering type.
Creating A Perspective View – You can use your 3D model to create as many plans, sections, elevations, and perspectives views that you require. To create a Perspective view it is easier if you use the Renderworks Camera tool to do it.
Every year we get an upgrade to Vectorworks. Usually we get a few exciting features, some features that don’t look very exciting but a very beneficial, and many small corrections to existing tools. This year is no different.
For Vectorworks 2016 we have five major new technologies:
- Project sharing
- Point clouds
- Subdivision Modelling
We will be covering these technologies in detail, probably later in the year or early next year, but in this manual there will be a brief overview of these technologies.
As well as these major changes to Vectorworks there are also some subtle changes to the interface. Often, these changes do not seem very dramatic, but history shows us that these changes tend to make it easier to use Vectorworks, making us more productive.
The term depth of field describes how much of your photo will be in focus. The camera tool now allows you to control how much is in focus using Depth of Field. But the way that controls how much is in focus is to do with the aperture of your camera. If you're an old school photographer you'll understand how aperture relates to depth of field, but if you're a modern digital camera photographer you may not understand this. In simple terms the larger the number for the aperture (f-22) the more will be in focus, the smaller the number for the aperture (f-2.8) the less will be in focus.
You can use a Renderworks Camera to create a viewport. This makes it fast and accurate to edit the view, and it makes it easy to duplicate viewports and edit the view.

I have tried to use an iPhone and an iPad to shoot video, but the results are not great. What I really want to is to mount the iPhone on a tripod. A standard tripod has a bolt to connect a camera, but the phone and tablet do not have the threaded hole for the bolt.
You can easily create a viewport from a camera, it is one of the easiest ways to set up perspective viewports.
Renderworks Camera. The Renderworks Camera tool is great for setting the view. It is similar to the Set 3D command in that you click to locate the camera position and look toward position, but unlike the Set 3D View, you end up with an object on the screen that you can move and edit.
One of the new features in Vectorworks 2011 is the ability to use the camera to create a viewport. If you use this technique, you do not need to create a crop object, and you can edit the camera settings after the viewport is made, if you need to change anything.
