Adobe Acrobat Reader updated

I got a notification this morning that Adobe Acrobat reader has bee updated. This is a new version of Acrobat Reader and it has a new interface.  Like the earlier versions of Acrobat , it allows you to open and save PDF’s, annotate them , and mark them. But it also is designed to integrate with dropbox and Adobe’s own Document Cloud, or Creative Cloud (if you subscribe to this service).

Continuing Education (CPD) for Your Vectorworks Training

Many professional organisations require you to carry on Continuing Education, or Continuing Professional Development, to maintain your skill level. Clients often ask if the Vectorworks training they do through this website or through face-to-face training can be used for these Continuing Education (CPD) credits. The short answer is yes. Book Review – The Tipping Point

The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

I enjoy reading and re-reading this book. When the police crack down on speed 4km over the speed limit, this book explains why. Highly recommended.

Book Review – Inbound Marketing

Instead of bulk emails or called calling, what about using Inbound Marketing to get potential customers to contact you? I have read this book several times and it is really helping me to understand social media for marketing.

Traditional “outbound” marketing methods like cold-calling, email blasts, advertising and direct mail are increasingly less effective. People are now increasingly turning to Google, social media and blogs to find products and services. Inbound Marketing helps you take advantage of this change by showing you how to get found by customers online.

Do IT Pros Recommend Macintosh?

I had to laugh when I read this blog post. For many years I have been arguing with IT pros about the differences between Windows and Mac. In my office I use both systems, but I find the Macintosh easy to use. In this blog post the argument is that IT professionals often recommend Macintosh computers to their friends and families to avoid having to support the Windows machines.

3D Printing – “The first truly consumer 3D printer”

I have been following 3D printing for a few years now. 3D printing has been around for several years. When I first started following 3D printing, the printers were extremely expensive ($30K). But I always thought that the 3D printers would become like the laser printers of the past. When the Macintosh first came out and the laser printer followed, they were very expensive. Only the richest clients could afford to buy a laser printer. Nowadays, you can buy a laser printer for a couple of hundred dollars. I thought the 3D printers would follow this trend.

Should you Upgrade to OS X.9 Mavericks

Last week Apple announced the new version of its operating system, called Mavericks. The temptation is to install it right away, it looks so cool and it has so many new features. But take care. I have been seeing reports from Vectorworks users that they are having trouble running Vectorworks 2011. To me, this is not a surprise. I still have one Mac in my office running Lion (10.7) because my software for manual writing will not work with later versions of the Mac operating system. I could upgrade my InDesign, but the last upgrade was only a couple of years ago and current version does all I want.

Evernote Post-It Notes

I like creating Post-it notes and sticking them into the books that I am reading, for keeping reminders, for making updates in my manuals,  recording ideas for blogs, etc. The problem is that I end up with Post-it notes all over the place. But I found out recently that Evernote allows you to photograph your post it notes install them as part of your Evernote database.

Is Other Software Better Than Vectorworks?

I have been reading the Vectorworks tech board recently. Generally this community board is there for users to help each other and mostly it works well for that. There are some visitors to the site that seem to want to complain about Vectorworks. Be careful about believing the opinions on the tech board, sometimes it is like listening to talkback radio, where the opinions have no basis.

Self Directed Study

I have been looking at the course notes for one paper at a local college. I was interested to see that the tutor expects students to attend 2 hours of lecture, 2 hours of tutorial, and 6 hours of self-directed study. The tutor is saying that you should put more time into self-directed than you get form the college. Total time for one paper is 10 hours per week, most of which is self-directed.

You Can Teach an Old Dog New Tricks!

I sometimes get clients telling me that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. What they mean by this is it they think that they are too old to change their habits to learn that works effectively. I have always thought that this is a bit of a copout, that the reason they do not want to learn new tricks is because they do not want to invest the time.
