In this session, we looked at a landscape plan that included plans and 3D views. We looked in detail at how we could create the drawing, how we should use design layers and classes, and how these relate to landscape drawings, creating a site model, and detailing.

01:59 We looked at the list of design layers needed to create this project. For this landscape project, all of the landscape work (plants, hardscapes, landscape areas, fences, etc.) requires only one design layer. Some designers like to separate their work so that all of the plants from the same design layer or all of the hardscapes are on the same design layer. This really depends on your philosophy and on your project. Some projects need to be phased; the designs for those projects work best when all the work for each phase is placed on a separate design layer. Either way, you can think of design layers as a container. Just put in as much as you need. Classes are also a fundamental organizing method which works in conjunction with design layers. Typically, classes are used to control visibility and graphic style. Some objects (plants, hardscapes, landscape areas) have parts that you want to hide on some drawings. Classes are ideal for this.
05:20 If you are accustomed to using layers to control the graphic style of your drawing (stacking order), then you might find using fewer layers and more classes problematic. The answer is to control the stacking review objects by using the Send to Front or Send to Back command. This might be a change to your current design philosophy. However, it is sometimes easier to make sure that you have all of your landscape objects on the same design layer. Think of layers as being groups of information. Think of classes as being used to control the graphic style of things. You could use layers to separate your projects into stages. From a landscape point of view, you could have all of the plants on phase 1 and their own layer, all of the plants for phase 2 on a separate layer, and so on. This will make it easy to schedule the planting and to create the drawings.
19:36 If you have information that needs to be drawn at different scales, details for example, then it is easy to create a new layer for that information. The reason that I create a new layer for details is so that the text and dimensions are accurately placed on the details. There is a technique in Vectorworks where you can scale text and dimensions in a viewport, but it does not allow you to accurately place the dimensions and text. When you scale text and dimensions in the viewport the text sometimes moves.
28:22 Objects like plants and symbols can have multiple classes inside them that control the graphic style of the objects. For example, the interior line work of a plant object is controlled by the class of the line work. You can also have symbols that have multiple classes inside them, allowing you to change the graphic style of the symbol based on the classes that you make visible or invisible.
31:33 We looked at how to select the plants so that we could change the text style of the plant tags. The user wanted to be able to select just the plant tag itself, but the tag was connected to the plant. The only way to select the tag is to select the entire plant. Once you have selected all of the plants (using the Select Similar tool), you can then assign a text style from the Resource Manager.
37:43 We looked briefly at creating a site model and the tools that you could use to create the base information required for site modeling. It turned out that we needed to look at the difference between polygons and polylines and at how Vectorworks converts these into site model information.
47:43 Sometimes when you import a DXF or DWG file, you end up with a whole lot of classes that you now have to deal with. There is a concept in Vectorworks called class and layer mapping that will allow you to merge classes and layers together to tidy up the imported file. This was covered in June 2008 as a manual (SST_0806 – Layer and Class Mapping). The other thing that you can do is to delete a class that you do not require. If there is any information on that class, Vectorworks will ask you if you would like to delete that information or reassign that information to another class.
