Interactive Workshops October 2014 (1410) – What’s New in Vectorworks 2015

2014-10-15_14-04-40Every year Vectorworks gets updated and there are always lots of new features. But more than needing new features what we really need to know are the benefits of these new features. Features are nice, but benefits have a reward – they make Vectorworks easier to use, faster to use, more powerful.

Interactive Workshops August 2014 (1408) – DXF/DWG

We often have to work with consultants and clients that do not use Vectorworks. DXF or DWG (AutoCAD) is usually the best way to do this. It will allow the you to use their information in Vectorworks, or it will allow them to import your work. I know there are other ways to work with consultants using other file formats like IFC, but DXF/DWG is still the most common.

There are also several options with importing and exporting these files, so it’s important that you understand the implications of these.

Interactive Workshops July 2014 (1407) – Libraries – Managing and Creating Your Library

Libraries seems to be the one area of Vectorworks the causes the most confusion. It seems that users get confused about their own Vectorworks library, where they should store parts of it and where is the best place to store all their information. It’s tempting to think that you only need to have one library file and you can put all your resources in there, but this is not the way that Vectorworks likes to work.

Interactive Workshops May 2014 – Back to Basics – Worksheets

Worksheets allow you count and schedule items in Vectorworks. For example you can count all the trees in a site, schedule all the doors on a particular floor of a project, count up and schedule even find the weight of a bracket in a 3D model. Worksheets are an underused area of VectorWorks and this workshop should open your eyes about what you are able to do with them.

Interactive Workshops April 2014 – Spaces

Space objects in Vectorworks are very powerful and they have a lot of options. This means that you have to be aware of the options and settings in the Space Preferences. Once you have set the preferences the way that suits you, it is easy to create the spaces you want.

Interactive Workshops March 2014 – IFC

IFC Exporting and Importing – There has been a lot of talk recently about Building Information Modeling. In some countries this has become a major topic because some governments are moving towards a situation where all projects will be delivered using BIM principles. A major part of BIM this is to use IFC to export and import information from other parts of the project. Continue reading

Interactive Workshops February 2014 – Introduction to Plants and Planting

Introduction to Planting – Planting in Vectorworks is very important for designers and landscapers. But not every object in Vectorworks is a plant, only specific objects can be thought of as plants. A plant is to the combination of 2D graphics 3D graphics and data. These are combined together to create what Vectorworks calls a plant.

Interactive Workshops July 2013 – Customising Vectorworks

Vectorworks performs really well, but if you edit the workspace and customise the arrangement of the tools and menus it will perform even better. Making these changes can save you several minutes a day and it can also make it more pleasant to use Vectorworks. Say you could save five minutes a day with these simple changes. This does not sound like much, but five minutes a day equate to 20 hours a year. Multiply this by your or your staff’s salaries and think again.

Interactive Workshops May 2013 – Intermediate 3D Modeling

We often talk about Building Information Modeling and the assumption is that we will be building a 3D version of our building. However, there are several objects that you might want to model independently because the standard Vectorworks tools will not create exactly what you require.
