Vectorworks 2019 Courses Now Available

010

I am pleased to announce that I have completely updated and expanded courses for Vectorworks 2019:

Foundation Course

The purpose of this course is to teach you the basic concepts of Vectorworks. It is tempting to try to avoid these basic concepts, but these are the ones that make you truly effective in Vectorworks. It is tempting to try to avoid this course, but going to a more advanced one would be a mistake. This is the course you need if you really want to use Vectorworks well. It is important to work through each movie and exercise. You might not understand why you are learning a specific technique—but trust me—to maximize the potential of Vectorworks you will need to learn each one. I know that you want to progress as quickly as possible—we all want that! I have taught thousands of people Vectorworks by using the manual that this course is based on. They have become skilled at using Vectorworks by working through these exercises.

Vectorworks Building Information Modeling (Architect) 2019

Many people talk about BIM these days—it is a powerful way to create drawings. This course is an introduction to using Building Information Modeling with Vectorworks Architect. It is designed to teach you BIM concepts and how to use Vectorworks Architect so that you can be more productive. All of this has been brought together in a concise course.

Through the course, you will complete a simple two-story project that will teach you the basics of BIM. We will start with first principles and then construct a Building Model step by step so that we can create plans, sections, and elevations. We will progress through modeling the site, generating solar studies, rendering 3D views, creating internal room elevations, and constructing details.

SST_1603 – Alterations and Additions

Cover Image

DRAFT- In this manual are going to cover setting up an Alteration and Addition project. I sometimes call these renovation projects, but as someone recently pointed out, renovation suggests repairing. This manual is really about setting up an existing building which we can then amend to suit.

We will start with a discussion about measuring an existing building. There are several ways to deal with this:

  • manually measure the project
  • laser measure and manually record
  • laser measure connected to tablet
  • measured electronically with iphone
  • subcontract to surveyor

SST_1601 – Outdoor Lighting

1602, Outdoor LIghting, archoncadRendering is a fun art of using Vectorworks and in the past we have covered lighting (1502), but we covered it from the point of view of interior and architectural lighting. This manual is about exterior lighting, which suggests that we should be looking at nighttime lighting for architectural and landscape projects.

This means that we have to think about our rendering from a completely different point of view. Instead of trying to make sure that everything is visible, we’re trying to create a mood. We have to consider things like the moon, the night sky, the lights on the building, the lights inside the building, street lights, garden lights, et cetera.

SST_1507 – Site Modifiers in Vectorworks

site modifiers, Vectorworks, 1507, archoncad, jonathan pickupIn the previous month we looked at creating a site model, which is great but we will need to modify the site. That is what this manual is all about, Site Modifiers. A Site Modifier is a  specific object for changing a site model.  A Site modifier can be a range of objects, but their intention is to change the form of the site model.  Vectorworks includes a several tools for creating site modifiers. Some tools are designed to create other objects (hardscape, massing model, roads, etc), and they have options to create site modifiers as well. Some tools are designed to report information about the site or they can be used as site modifiers (Stake, Grade). Continue reading

SST_1506 – Site Modeling in Vectorworks

Cover ImageA site model is a way of looking at 3D data (spot levels or contours) in a way that allows you to see complex 3D models and 2D representations. VectorWorks uses the 3D information to create the models based on the data to help you understand the 2D and 3D nature of your site.

First you have to put in 3D data, such as spot levels, contours or surveyor’s file. Then you ask VectorWorks to create a site model from this data. VectorWorks uses a set of algorithms to analyze the information and then creates the 2D and 3D representations. The algorithms can be thought of as a set of mathematical assumptions that are used to calculate the 2D contours and 3D model. Because of these assumptions you may get some odd shaped contours, or 3D models that don’t look as you expected. A Site Model is not reality, it’s a mathematical model of the data you give VectorWorks. Better data – better Site Model.

Interactive Workshops June 2015 (1506) – Site Modeling

A site model is a way of looking at 3D data (spot levels or contours) in a way that allows you to see complex 3D models and 2D representations. Vectorworks uses the 3D information to create the models based on the data to help you understand the 2D and 3D nature of your site. When you create a Site model Vectorworks will make an Object that can show one type of information in a 2D view (2D contours) and a different type on information if you are in 3D view (3D contours or extruded contours etc.). Using this hybrid object is a good way of combining the 2D contours and the 3D site model into one object. If you are used to earlier versions of Vectorworks then this will be a very different way of working. The Plug-In Object allows you to turn on or off the existing and proposed site models.

Archoncad books in the Kindle Store

IIMG_0128.PNG have been working to catch up with my manuals on the Amazon Kindle store. I have been creating new covers for the Kindle books.

If you are a subscriber then you do not need to buy the Kindle version, you already have access to these manuals on this website. Your manuals have the movie links in them (which the Kindle books do not).
