SST_1706 – Irrigation

Cover ImageVectorworks has had irrigation tools for some time. In the past, the problem was that the irrigation tools were not suitable for real-world irrigation design.

The new irrigation tools are designed to address these challenges. There are several parts to the suite of irrigation tools. You have to choose the appropriate tool for the job that you want complete.

You can create hydrozones, irrigation outlets, water main lines, drip zones, etc. Each of these has a different tool for controlling the specifics. You can create an irrigation network that knows the the total water flow of the network, the water flow down each branch of the network, and the required pressure for each outlet.

Vectorworks Tips 448 – Connecting Walls and Slabs

Scannable Document on 26-05-2017, 12_59_22When you create walls and slabs, you can connect the wall components to slab components. The first step is to set up a wall style with components. One of those components should be a core (I usually use the structural part of the wall for this).

When you create the slab, you can bind slab components to wall parts. You can’t bind to all of the wall components, but you can bind to the inner component, outer component, and core.

Vectorworks Tips 447 – Wall Textures

WCM0374

Walls can be textured by object or by component. What does this mean? When you texture the wall by object, the textures are applied to the top, bottom, left, right, and center of the entire wall, regardless of the component textures. If you texture the wall by component, the texture of each component is applied to the entire component (top, bottom, and sides). Texturing walls by component can make the walls look more realistic.

Vectorworks Tips 446 – Slab Textures

Slabs can be textured by object or by component. What does this mean? When you texture the slab by object, the textures are applied to the top, bottom, and sides of the entire slab, regardless of the component textures. If you texture the slab by component, the texture of each component is applied to the entire component (top, bottom, and sides).

In this session, we looked at creating a small, outdoor pergola seating area and its drawing details. This means that we had to look at how the footings were created, how the posts would be connected to the footings in detail, and how we would construct the posts, beams, and trusses in detail.

In this session, we looked at creating a plant, connecting the plant to the plants database, creating a new plant in the database, creating a plant report, controlling how the plant report finds the plants, and controlling the slope of a hardscape object.

3D Modeling Special Interest Group – May 2017

3D_Modeling_may_2017

In this session, we looked at creating a tapered extrude for a table leg, creating quicker viewports from objects, creating a custom sketch style for a drawing, using the Fillet tool, and creating a Queen Anne style table leg.

Gettting Started Special Interest Group May 2017

In this session, we looked at creating a specific door and window combination by using the window plugin available in Australia and New Zealand (Windoor). We also looked at basic Vectorworks geometry and how to recognize the difference between X, Y, and Z. This led to a discussion about the screen plane, working plane, and layer plane.

In this session, we looked at three main topics. We looked at how to create a car park area that slopes in two directions, we looked at creating a building project that does not use stories, and we looked at how to control the graphics of wall components.

In this session, we looked at retaining walls again. We used a site modifier in contour mode to create a straight retaining wall. We then adjusted the grade limits to change the retaining wall into a battered slope between the two levels of the garden, adding rocks, steps, and a landscape area with plants to go around the rocks.

3D Modeling Special Interest Group – April 2017

3D Special Interest Group April 2017In this session, we wanted to look at how we could create a 3D model for the Tizio lamp, a classic table lamp designed by Richard Sapper in 1972. Creating a model from a known object will allow us to look at how we can start with a complex shape and break it up into simple chunks. Breaking up your 3D object into simple manageable chunks is an important skill in 3D modeling.

SST_1705 – Introduction to InteriorCAD XS

Cover ImageInteriorCAD XS is a plug-in for Vectorworks. In fact, it is a suite of plug-in tools. It does not come as a standard installation; it is something that you have to purchase in addition to Vectorworks.

Vectorworks 2017 has a new custom cabinet tool that is a derivative of InteriorCAD. InteriorCAD comes in two suites: InteriorCAD XS, which we will be looking at, and InteriorCAD, which is the fuller, more complex version for kitchen manufacturing. In this manual, we will only be looking at InteriorCAD XS.

In this session, we looked at a landscape plan that included plans and 3D views. We looked in detail at how we could create the drawing, how we should use design layers and classes, and how these relate to landscape drawings, creating a site model, and detailing.

Interior CAD comes in two suites: InteriorCAD XS, which we will be looking at, and the fuller, more complex version for kitchen manufacturing, which is called InteriorCAD. In this manual, we will only be looking at InteriorCAD XS.

Vectorworks comes with basic cabinets and the Custom Cabinet tool mentioned above. These are often enough for some designers. Some designers want to have more flexibility in their ability to design cabinetry. In this case, InteriorCAD XS is a good solution.

In this session, we looked at capping the end of a wall, and we looked at roading on a site model. We spent most of the time looking at roading, how to set the road in relation to a site model and how to make changes to the end of a Roadway object so that it matches the opening of a garage.

Vectorworks Tips 445 – Clip Cube Viewport

clip cube viewport

I saw someone on the community board ask if it was possible to use the click cube to create a perspective viewport. It is possible. There are a few steps involved in this:

  1.  Use the Clip Cube to create a section viewport.
  2.  Place the section viewport on a design layer.
  3.  Use a camera to create the required perspective view.
  4.  Create a viewport from this design layer in place of the standard viewport on a sheet layer.

Introduction to InteriorCAD XS

Large_Black_Dotted_1_p7_20170504Next week, we have sessions that focus on using InteriorCAD XS. These sessions will focus on an introduction to using it rather than focusing on the advanced features. When you learn the basics really well, the advanced features are easy to deal with.

In order to understand how InteriorCAD XS has been designed, we will be looking at creating a few units, as shown in the sketch.

The sessions are starting next week; so, if you are a subscriber, make sure you book now!
